The Kenya Police Service has announced a blanket ban on protests in the capital city of Nairobi and its environs, effective immediately.
According to a statement released by the police, “credible intelligence suggests that criminal elements are planning to infiltrate the protests and perpetrate violence, posing a significant threat to public safety”.
“No demonstrations will be permitted in the Nairobi Central Business District and its surroundings until further notice to ensure public safety,” the police said in a statement on Wednesday evening.
The protests, which began last month in response to proposed tax hikes, have continued despite the government’s withdrawal of the controversial proposal.
The demonstrations have resulted in widespread violence, with at least 50 people killed and 413 injured. Significant property damage has also been reported.
While the police ban has been met with criticism from some quarters, with many arguing that it violates the constitutional right to free assembly, the authorities maintain that the move is necessary to prevent further bloodshed and destruction.
“The ban comes into effect immediately, and any attempts to defy it will be met with swift action,” the police have warned.
