Ngozi Nwosu, the beloved actress synonymous with the character Peaceful Peace from the iconic 90’s sitcom Fuji House of Commotion, has shared her candid thoughts on the evolution of Nollywood.
With a career spanning decades, the 60-year-old is a seasoned observer of the industry’s transformation.
Describing acting as a blend of work and passion, the veteran actress admitted the emotional toll of embodying diverse characters. “It’s all-encompassing,” she said, emphasizing the challenges and rewards of the profession.
However, she expressed concern over the current state of Nollywood.
She criticized the lack of originality in many contemporary films, accusing filmmakers of relying heavily on foreign scripts without adapting them to local realities. “A lot of people who are not supposed to be producers are now producers. Wishy-washy stories every day. There are some stories you read and you know immediately this is from foreign movies. They are not relatable. People have become lazy. They don’t want to research again because they are after the money,” she said.
In addition, the veteran actress touched on the changing dynamics within the industry, expressing concerns about trust and transparency among colleagues.
“We no longer relate as we used to anymore. We used to go to our fellow actors’ houses and drink water but you can’t do that anymore because you don’t know who to trust. All leaves are lying down but you don’t know the one with a stomach ache.
People in our time were more careful with how they represented themselves but now everybody just does whatever they want. Today if you like, be naked, no one cares,” she lamented.
While acknowledging the limitations imposed by age on the types of roles offered to her, Nwosu emphasized her versatility as an actress. “I’m not stagnant at all. I try to be as versatile as I can even in the motherly roles given to me.”
