Olympics: Super Falcons group opponents Japan thrash Ghana in friendly

JAPAN, one of the group opponents of the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the women’s football event of the Paris 2024 Olympics, continued their preparations with a friendly victory over Ghana today.

The 2011 world champions trounced the Black Queens 4-0 in the Nonto Peninsula Earthquake Reconstruction Support Match held at the Go Go Curry Stadium in Ishikawa, Japan.

Ghana, Nigeria’s fierce West African rivals, prevented Japan from scoring in the first half before capitulating in the second half, with Tanaka Mina and Fujino Aoba among the scorers.

Nine-time African champions Nigeria, who are appearing at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament for the first time since 2008 in China, will face Brazil, Spain and Japan, in that order, in the group phase at the Paris 2024 Games.

The Super Falcons’ first game against Brazil is at the Stade Bordeaux on July 25, before battling Spain three days later and Japan on July 31.

The matches against Spain and Japan will be held at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes, where the Super Eagles famously defeated tournament favourites Spain 3-2 in a memorable game at the 1998 FIFA World Cup finals.

The Super Falcons will play Olympic champions Canada in a preparatory friendly in Seville, Spain on Wednesday.
