The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Kuku, has revealed that only three out of Nigeria’s 22 international and domestic airports are commercially viable.
Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’ breakfast show on Tuesday, Kuku disclosed that the remaining 19 airports require subsidies due to insufficient passenger traffic that fails to meet their operational costs.
“Out of the 22 airports managed by FAAN, only three are commercially viable,” Kuku stated.
“The majority of these airports require substantial upgrades to critical infrastructure, including terminal areas, landside, and airside facilities.”
She emphasized that many runways across the country’s airports have exceeded their 20-year validity period and are due for significant upgrades.
“The airport authority is focusing on these developmental goals this year,” Kuku noted, highlighting FAAN’s commitment to enhancing airport infrastructure and ensuring better service delivery.
Kuku’s remarks underscore the challenges facing Nigeria’s aviation sector, particularly in maintaining and upgrading infrastructure to meet international standards and improve overall efficiency and safety.
