Paris 2024 Olympics: Tobi Amusan named Nigeria’s flagbearer

WORLD champion and medal prospect Tobi Amusan will bear Team Nigeria’s flag at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Games will officially begin on Friday with the opening ceremony, which will include athletes from all participating nations parading around the stadium.

Amusan, the world record holder in women’s 110 metres hurdles, will have the honour of bearing Nigeria’s flag during the march past of athletes at the ceremony billed for Stade de France in Paris.

The 27-year-old Amusan, who won Nigeria’s first-ever World Athletics Championship title in 2022, becomes the first track and field star in 20 years to be so honoured, after the legendary Mary Onyali at the Athens 2004 Games.

The Nigeria Olympic Committee has also named badminton star Anuoluwapo Opeyori as the general captain for Team Nigeria in Paris.

Opeyori, 27, is a multiple-times winner of African Games gold and African Badminton Championship titles, and he will be attending his second Olympics after competing at Tokyo 2020 three years ago.

Team Nigeria will be represented by 86 athletes competing in 12 sports, including women’s football, women’s basketball. athletics, badminton, boxing, wrestling and weightlifting.
