US Representative Lauren Boebert (R-CO) has introduced a bill aimed at defunding the salary of the Director of the United States Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle.
The bill, co-sponsored by eight other House Republicans, comes on the heels of a recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
The Representatives include: Rep. Jeff Duncan (S.C.), Rep. Diana Harshbarger (Tenn.), Rep. Cory Mills (Fla.), Rep. Tim Burchett (Tenn.), Rep. Barry Moore (Ala.), Rep. Andy Ogles (Tenn.), Rep. Josh Brecheen (Okla.), and Rep. Bill Posey (Fla.).
Rep. Boebert has been vocal in her criticism of the Secret Service, accusing the agency of prioritizing “woke DEI policies” over its core responsibilities, including protecting the country’s leaders.
“Saturday’s assassination attempt on President Trump’s life was either intentional or the result of gross incompetence by the United States Secret Service.
“Under Director Cheatle’s failed leadership, the United States Secret Service has prioritized woke DEI policies over the core responsibilities of the Secret Service, including protecting our nation’s leaders.
“This lack of leadership contributed to the first assassination attempt of a President in 43 years. Director Cheatle has got to go!” Boebert said in a statement alongside the bill’s announcement.
The bill seeks to prohibit federal funds from being used to pay the Director’s salary, effectively stripping the agency’s leadership of its funding.
The bill ‘To prohibit the use of Federal funds for the salary of the Director of the United States Secret Service’ read:
“Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled.
“This Act may be cited as the ‘Secret Service Accountability Act’.
“Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no Federal funds may be obligated or expended for the salary.”
In an interview with ABC News on Monday, Cheatle said that the Secret Service bears responsibility for the security lapses that led to the shooting.
“The buck stops with me, I am the director of the Secret Service, and I need to make sure that we are performing a review and that we are giving resources to our personnel as necessary,” Cheatle said.
However, she has said she will not resign from her role in the wake of the criticism.
