Nigerian activist lawyer Madubuachi Idam has stated that President Joe Biden withdrew from the U.S. presidential race due to his poor debate performance and deteriorating health.
Idam remarked that Nigerian politicians are unlikely to follow such an example, as they often disregard competence.
Idam emphasized that Nigerians should prioritize the mental and physical health of leaders when casting their votes. He stated: โJoe Biden has stepped aside (not willingly) from his second presidential bid, chiefly because of his poor performance at the presidential debate and his ailing health. Politicians in Nigeria bluntly snub debates, and it doesnโt even cause a stir. Often, those who skip debates or perform poorly are still elected.โ
Idam criticized the Nigerian political system, saying: โCompetence is not a factor in Nigerian politics, but money is. Despite our calls for change, we repeatedly elect incompetent and unhealthy leaders and expect them to effectively manage over 250 million people.โ
He added, โLeadership is not a gamble. No economy grows without sound policies aimed at achieving results. The sooner Nigerians start considering the soundness of mind and body in electing leaders, the sooner we can address our leadership issues.โ
