The Abia State Government has established a Monkeypox Virus Treatment and Support Center at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH) following the confirmation of one case in the state.
This intervention was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing after this week’s State Executive Council (SEC) meeting, presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Kanu revealed that the state has recorded one confirmed case of Monkeypox among 13 suspected cases, all within the Isi-ala Ngwa Council area. He further noted that there have been no fatalities associated with the virus thus far.
“A total of 13 suspected cases have been recorded. Out of this number, nine tested negative, one tested positive, and two cases are awaiting further clarification. The good news is that there has been no fatality so far,” Kanu reported.
In anticipation of potential developments, the Commissioner assured the public that the state government is ready to establish additional treatment and support centres if necessary.
However, he expressed confidence that the virus would not spread further.
“This is a viral infection, and the state Ministry of Health has opened a treatment support centre at ABSUTH. Should more cases emerge, additional centres may be opened across the state, but we are hopeful that the situation will not escalate,” Kanu added.
Prince Kanu also urged residents to remain vigilant, adhere to good hygiene practices, and observe social distancing, especially when in contact with individuals suspected of contracting the virus.
