BREAKING: Mikel Merino Signs for Arsenal on Long-Term Deal

Spain international Mikel Merino has officially joined Arsenal from La Liga side Real Sociedad, signing a long-term contract with the Premier League club.

The 28-year-old midfielder, known for his versatility and tactical intelligence, brings a wealth of experience to Arsenal after spending six successful years with Sociedad, where he made 242 appearances, scored 27 goals, and provided 30 assists.

The transfer was confirmed on Tuesday through a statement on Arsenalโ€™s official website, titled โ€œMikel Merino Signs for Arsenal on Long-Term Deal.โ€

Arsenalโ€™s Sporting Director, Edu, expressed his excitement about the new signing, stating, โ€œWe are thrilled to have completed the transfer of Mikel Merino. This has been another great team effort from many people at the club to finalise the transfer of a player who attracted interest from several clubs over the summer. Mikel was a key target for us this summer, and we identified him as a player who can fit perfectly into our squad and enhance our team as we aim to build on our strong performances from last season.โ€

Edu further highlighted the qualities Merino will bring to the team, saying, โ€œWith Mikelโ€™s arrival, we gain additional high-quality experience, physicality, and athleticism as we look forward to the season ahead. We welcome Mikel and his family to the club and look forward to seeing him play in an Arsenal shirt.โ€

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also praised the new addition, noting Merinoโ€™s potential impact on the team.

โ€œMikel is a player who will bring immense quality with his experience and versatility. He has played at the highest level both club and international, for several seasons. Mikel will significantly strengthen our squad with his technical ability, strong character, and positive personality,โ€ Arteta said.

Reflecting on Merinoโ€™s recent success, Arteta added, โ€œAs we saw in the summer, Mikel is also a winner, with his outstanding performances throughout the Euros helping Spain win the tournament. Merino, who began his professional career with Osasuna and later won the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund, will wear the number 23 shirt at Arsenal and will join his new teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre immediately.

The transfer, which reportedly cost Arsenal โ‚ฌ32 million plus โ‚ฌ5 million in add-ons, was sealed with a four-year contract that includes an option for an additional season.

Transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano confirmed the details on his X account, stating, โ€œOfficial, confirmed. Merino will reunite with his former Sociedad teammate and current Arsenal captain, Martin Odegaard, as they both prepare to contribute to Arsenalโ€™s ambitions for the upcoming season.
