Tension has continued to escalate in the ongoing nationwide protest as policemen fire teargas canisters at protesters and journalists.
The policemen fired teargas canisters at protesters assembling at the popular Berger roundabout in Abuja. Journalists covering the protest were also tear-gassed at a different place they gathered. However, the protesters have not backed down as they carried on with their demand for an end to bad governance in te country.
Reporters and other media practitioners usually cover protests and other public events so as to provide accurate information to members of the public.
While engaging in such press duties, they are usually treated with caution and provided wit security guards to protect them, however, it is not clear why the case was different in Nigeria amid allegations of human rights and press freedom violations against security operatives and the authorities.
