BRIGHTON rose to the top of the English Premier League today with a 2-1 victory Manchester United at the Amex Stadium.
Joao Pedro scored a stoppage-time winner to hand the Seagulls victory, their fifth in six games against Erik ten Hag’s side.
Brighton took the lead when Kaoru Mitoma received the ball on the left flank before his cross went through United’s defence and into the six-yard box for Danny Welbeck to tap home against his former club.
It was a milestone 100th career goal for Welbeck, who ironically began his career at Manchester United.
Amad Diallo drew United level on the hour mark, the Ivorian forward beating Brighton’s offside trap and cutting inside his marker to fire home via a deflection.
With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Brighton’s pressure paid off when Simon Adingra found space in the box and chipped the ball over United’s sloppy defenders to an inexplicably unmarked Pedro, who headed home to give them their second win of the season.
United put the ball in the net before Pedro’s winner when Alejandro Garnacho turned home Bruno Fernandes’ low cross, but the ball hit Joshua Zirkzee on the way in, and the Netherlands striker with Nigerian heritage was in an offside position.
