Customs Will Ensure Imported Foods Enter Nigeria Swiftly – Adeniyi

The Comptroller-General of Nigeria’s Customs Service Bashir Adewale Adeniyi on Tuesday stated that the commission would contribute to streamlining processes to ensure imported food items enter the country swiftly.

He said that all food items entering Nigeria will meet the required standards, which will ultimately reduce costs, lower consumer prices, and support the government’s national food security initiatives.

Speaking during the address on facilitating food trade through an efficient customs process at the Nigeria Customs Service headquarters on Tuesday, the comptroller-general highlighted that one of the triggers of the just concluded 10 days protest was the dissatisfaction with the current state of the Nigerian economy including the soaring prices of food items and the unaffordability of staple food by common Nigerians.

Adeniyi added that the government is not ignorant of Nigerians’ plights and is putting initiatives in place for the good of all.

“Our government has not been deaf to the cries of our citizens. The Nigerian government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing the pressing issue of food security through a series of targeted measures.”

“Despite government efforts to boost local food production, the rising food import bill underscores significant challenges in achieving food security and stabilising domestic prices. Addressing these concerns requires concerted efforts, with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) playing a crucial role in facilitating efficient food trade.” Bashir said.

He added that for the effective implementation of the government, the Customs Service is committed to enforcing these policies, in a manner that facilitates trade, supports economic growth, and ultimately contributes to the food security and well-being of every Nigerian.

“However, the success of these initiatives hinges on effective implementation, and this is where the NCS plays a crucial role.

“As the gatekeepers to our nation’s international trade, we are at the forefront of supporting and translating these policies into tangible benefits for our citizens.”
