In the early hours of Monday, a powerful explosion rocked the Secretariat of the Action People’s Party (APP) in Rivers State, located along the GRA axis of Port Harcourt.
The incident, which occurred around 1 a.m., has left the political landscape in the state in a state of tension and uncertainty.
Sources indicate that the explosion was caused by a detonated dynamite, which caused significant damage to the building. The blast shattered windows, doors, and other property within the secretariat, including the ceiling and fittings.
The incident has left the leadership and members of the APP in a state of panic as they assess the extent of the damage.
Although the identities of those responsible for the explosion remain unknown at this time, the incident is believed to be linked to ongoing political tensions in Rivers State.
The explosion comes amid widespread speculation that Governor Siminialayi Fubara is planning to defect from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APP, following reports of a power struggle within the PDP involving his predecessor, Chief Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
A member of the APP, who identified himself only as Chimene, confirmed the attack and expressed his belief that it was politically motivated.
“Yes, I’m a member of the APP. I was informed of the attack about 3 a.m. today,” Chimene said.
“This is politically motivated, and there is no two ways about it. They know that the APP is a fast-growing political party in the state. We call on the police to investigate this and arrest the culprits.”
As of press time, no group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, and investigations are ongoing.
The incident has heightened concerns about the safety of political offices and the potential for further unrest as the state’s political climate becomes increasingly volatile.
