Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is poised to become the new head coach of the United States national team, Soccernet.football understands.
The Athletic revealed that Pochettino has agreed in principle to lead the USMNT as they gear up for the 2026 World Cup, which the country will co-host with Mexico and Canada.
Pochettino, 52, has been without a job since parting ways with Chelsea in May, following a disappointing season where the club finished sixth in the Premier League.
The Argentine manager, who previously had successful spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur, would replace Gregg Berhalter if the deal is finalised.
Discussions between Pochettino and US Soccer Federation technical director Matt Crocker reportedly played a significant role in reaching this agreement.
However, it is important to note that no contract has been signed yet. Furthermore, the US Soccer Federation’s board of directors has not formally approved the deal.
One obstacle delaying the contract is Pochettino’s ongoing financial settlement with Chelsea, which needs to be resolved before he can officially commit to US Soccer.
If all goes according to plan, Pochettino could be in charge of the US team in time for their friendly against Canada on September 7 in Kansas City.
His appointment comes at a critical time as the United States aims to make a strong showing on home soil during the 2026 World Cup, and his wealth of experience in top-flight football is expected to be a significant asset for the team.
