The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line will on Wednesday (tomorrow) begin partial, invitational passenger operations.
The trains will run four trips a day between Oyingbo and Agbado.
According to the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), the non-fee- paying passenger operations are intended for collection of feedback before the commencement of commercial operations.
“The Red Line, one of the six rail lines and one monorail prescribed for Lagos in her Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP) is a vital transport project connecting Lagos with Ogun State where many workers and business owners in Lagos reside.
“This milestone marks the culmination of planning, training of technical and ground staff, installing all the security features and a successful six-week trial run conducted without passengers to ensure the system’s safety, reliability, and efficiency.
“From Wednesday, August 28th, the Red Line system will interact with non-fee- paying passengers in organized groups to collect feedback before the commencement of commercial operations.
“The partial operations, similar to what was done during the test phase of the Blue Line, a major step forward in realizing the Lagos State Government’s vision of a modern, efficient, integrated and sustainable transportation system,” said LAMATA’s Head Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, in a statement on Tuesday.
President Bola Tinubu in February commissioned the first phase of the project, which spans 27-kilometter, from Agbado to Oyingbo.
It is expected to reduce traffic congestion and travel time from Agbado to Oyingbo by about 1:20 minutes.
