NIGERIANS have successfully raised N1.8 million for a protester whose son aspires to be a programmer.
Ogwu Chijioke joined hundreds of demonstrators on the streets of Lagos State yesterday to participate in the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests, aimed at addressing the country’s severe economic challenges.
In an interview at the Lekki Toll Gate area of Lagos, Chijioke shared the difficulties he faces in helping his son achieve his dream of becoming a programmer.
“I’m coming from Mile 2, Festac. My 13-year-old son is already a programmer, but I can’t even afford data for him to learn more. I can’t pay his tuition fees, which amount to millions of naira. He can already program games at just 13,” he explained, holding onto his bicycle.
“My name is Ogwu Benjamin Chijioke. I would rather die on the streets than at home. I can’t just sit idly by while my son’s future slips away. I may have lost hope for my own future in Nigeria, but I won’t let my son’s potential be wasted.”
Moments later, his video gained significant traction online.
“You can feel the passion in his soul,” wrote social media influencer Morris Monye, who shared the video on his X account.
“He’s lost faith that his life will improve, but he still holds onto hope for his son. That’s why he’s protesting.”
“Hello, everyone. I’ve obtained his details,” Morris posted a few hours later. “We need N1.8 million to help make his dreams a reality.”
Within just 24 hours, the crowdfunded amount was achieved.
“N1.8 million raised. Funds secured. The crowdfunding is now over,” he confirmed. “Thank you all for your kindness.” Morris posted
