Obaseki Rewards Edo Queens With N100m For Qualifying For CAF Women’s Champions League

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has rewarded Edo Queens with a sum of N100m for emerging victorious at the WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers.

The Moses Aduku-led girls defeated Beninoise side Ainonvi FC 3-0 in the final on Sunday to win the trophy and also sealed their place in the CAF Women’s Champions League in November.

The governor made the announcement during a reception organised for the team on Tuesday in Benin City.

He said, “You have all done well. For me, this is our season of celebration. Today, Edo will be 33 years old.

“When I look at the present you have come to give me, I am so glad.

“Before we came into power, there was no respect for Edo women; nobody gave them a chance, but thank God all that has changed now.

“Some past governments didn’t understand that sports is a vital aspect of youth development, and thank God we recognize that.

“I am happy that the work and investment we have put in over the past eight years are showing now, and we will continue to encourage our youth.”

The governor urged the girls to go all out to win the CAF Women’s Champions League trophy in November.

“I congratulate you, girls. I encourage you to win the CAF Champions League. I will not disclose what I will do for you yet, but for what you have done, you have made us proud, and you have made Nigeria proud. So, I’ll give you all N100m.”

Edo Queens became the third Nigerian team to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League after Rivers Angels and Bayelsa Queens.

Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa are the defending champions of the competition.
