Olympics: Team Nigeria sure of first medal as Blessing Oborududu reaches wrestling semi-finals

TEAM Nigeria is guaranteed at least a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics following Blessing Oborududu’s advancement into the women’s wrestling semi-finals today.

Oborududu qualified for the women’s wrestling 68kg semi-final with a 6-2 points victory over France’s Koumba Larroque, who was loudly cheered on by the home fans during the in the quarterfinal bout.

By reaching the semi-finals, billed for later tonight, Oborududu is guaranteed at least a bronze medal, which she could elevate to gold or silver if she advances to the final.

Oborududu, 35, was the first Nigerian to ever win an Olympic medal in wrestling with her silver at the delayed Tokyo 2020 Games three years ago.

To reach the quarter-finals, Oborududu produced a dominant performance in her first match of today, overcoming Canada’s Linda Morais 8-2 in a repeat of the 2022 Commonwealth Games final.
