Tragedy struck in Runjin Barmo village, Kajiji District, Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State, as seven members of a family died after consuming a contaminated cassava delicacy.
The incident was confirmed in a statement issued by Nura Bello, the Information Officer of the Sokoto State Ministry of Health, on Sunday.
The statement revealed that the village head, Muhammadu Modi, informed the stateโs Commissioner for Health, Asabe Balarabe, about the incident.
According to Modi, the victims, Abubakar, his wife Aโishatu, and their five children, consumed the cassava meal for dinner.
Commissioner Balarabe visited the village to assess the situation and determine the cause of the contamination for further government action.
She announced that the ministry would collect samples from one teenager who survived after consuming the suspected cassava meal.
Expressing her condolences, Balarabe offered her sympathy to the affected community during this difficult time.
The government is expected to take necessary measures to prevent such incidents from recurring in the future.
