Supreme Court: Kogi Govt Condemns Attack On Ajaka, Calls For Arrest Of Perpetrators

Kogi State Government has condemned attacks on the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Alhaji Muritala Yakubu Ajaka, at the Supreme Court, on Friday.

The Apex court had on Friday dismissed Ajakaโ€™s appeal, challenging the victory of Ahmed Usman Ododo of the All Progressives Congress APC at the November 11 governorship election in Kogi State.

Justice Sadiq Abubakar Umar delivering the lead judgement dismissed the appeal, for lacking in merit.

The attack happened moments after the determination of the appeal, as Ajaka made his way out of the court.

The attack which started with jeers from supporters of the governor, who screamed โ€œoleโ€ at Ajaka, soon turned chaotic, causing officers of the Nigerian police to whisk the SDP candidate away to prevent further damages.

The incident left shattered glasses at the Supreme Court as the crowd struggled to force their way out of the court.

Reacting through a press statement issued on Sunday, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, said the governor, Alhaji Ahmed Ododo described the conduct of the hoodlums as barbaric, uncivilised, and a grave danger to the institution of justice.

He said such attacks have no place in our justice system and urged security operatives to investigate and bring to book those who orchestrated it.

Fanwo said โ€œAs a Government, we implore the law enforcement agencies to fish out the perpetrators and make them face the full wrath of the law to serve as a deterrent to others as well as protect the integrity and safety of our court environments across the country.

โ€œWe urge all Nigerians to support the path of constitutionalism and unity, which are the core values of President Bola Ahmed Tinubuโ€™s administration. We all must support his lofty policies and values for the progress and development of our dear nation.โ€ he said.
