Sven-Goran Eriksson: Ex-coach of Super Eagles duo passes away

Swedish gaffer, Sven-Goran Eriksson, who was the former coach of Super Eagles duo, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Chinedi Obasi, has passed away, Soccernet.ng reports.

The former England managerโ€”where he managed the likes of Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerard, David Beckhamโ€”died at the age of 76, after being diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer.

During his coaching time, the Swede managed a few Nigerian players, like Aiyegbeni when he was at Leicester City, and Obasi who played under Sven-Grion at Chinese side Shenzhen.

Under the former Benfica managerโ€™s guidance, Leicester Cityโ€™s fortunes began to turn around, thanks in part to loan signings such as Yakubu from Everton.

The former Nigerian international made a significant impact, netting 11 goals in 20 appearances. This contribution helped Leicester steadily rise up the Premier League table.

Meanwhile, for Obasi under Sven-Goran, he did not score too much, he netted five goals in 17 appearances before making a return back to Swedish league side, AIK Football.

Also, during Svenโ€™s time in China, reports revealed by Mail Sports suggest that he was interested in luring Mikel Obi away from Chelsea to Shanghai SIPG.

According to reports, the Asian club were willing to offer ยฃ6million for the Nigerian plus wages of ยฃ60,000 a week after tax. But eventually, signed for Tianjin TEDA instead.

With no doubt, Sven made a lasting impact in the world of football with his innovative approach and tactical brilliance and his death marks the end of a distinguished era.
