Tension As NYSC Declares Akwa Ibom Coordinator, Driver Missing

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that its Akwa Ibom State Coordinator, Mr. Okun Christopher, and his driver, Mr. Daniel Effiong, have gone missing.

A press statement released by the NYSC Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa on Wednesday, stated that the duo might have been kidnapped by unknown gunmen while travelling on a highway connecting Onitsha, Delta State, and Owerri, Imo State, two days ago.

The scheme in the statement noted that all efforts to locate their whereabouts has yielded no result till date.

โ€œThis is to inform the general public that two officers of National Youth Service Corps got missing between Onitsha and Owerri road on Monday, July 29, 2024.

โ€œThe Officers, Mr Okun Christopher, NYSC Akwa-Ibom State Coordinator and his driver, Mr Daniel Effiong Asibong were on transit to Uyo in Akwa-Ibom in a white official Hilux vehicle with registration number 27D31FG when they were last communicated with.

โ€œMeanwhile, all efforts to locate their whereabouts have yielded no result till date.

โ€œAnyone with useful information regarding their whereabout should contact any of the 37 NYSC State Secretariats, Area Offices and the National Directorate Headquarters in Abuja or the nearest police station or other security agencies for prompt action,โ€ the statement said.

This comes nearly one year after eight corps members were kidnapped by suspected terrorists while en route to their camp in Zamfara State on August 21, 2023.

The incident occurred when their Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) bus was intercepted by the kidnappers while travelling from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State to Sokoto State for their national service.
