The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a critical warning to residents living along the banks of the River Niger and River Benue, urging immediate relocation to safer areas to safeguard lives and property.
In a statement released on Friday, NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, reported that water levels in both rivers have surged to alarming heights, reaching what the agency has labeled as the “red mark.”
This development necessitates prompt action from citizens living in proximity to these waterways.
The Director General emphasized the urgency for Nigerians to heed the agency’s warnings. He advised residents to undertake essential preventive measures, including clearing drainages and gutters to facilitate water runoff and minimize the risk of flooding.
“The prolonged rain that has persisted across the nation has caused some devastating flash floods,” Mohammed noted, highlighting the potential dangers posed by the current weather conditions.
Reiterating NIHSA’s commitment to managing and developing the nation’s water resources, Mohammed assured the public that the agency will continue to monitor the water levels of major rivers and tributaries on a daily basis. This includes issuing timely flood warnings and alerts, as well as providing flood predictions to keep the public informed.
“NIHSA is pro-actively in synergy with emergency response agencies and the media,” the statement added.
“This effort aims to save lives and property of Nigerians, abate flood impact, enhance food security, promote national resilience to flooding, and foster sustainable water resources management.”
As the rainy season continues, the agency urges all citizens to remain vigilant and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their communities from the threats posed by rising water levels.
