The President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Davidson Alaribe, has said the former president of the institute and Doyen of Accountancy profession in Nigeria, late Akintola Williams was a man who led the institute with exceptional vision, leaving behind legacies.
He spoke at the maiden memorial lecture organised by ICAN) in honour of the late Williams in Lagos.
Alaribe said this year’s theme, “Leadership Dynamics: Current Realities and the Way Forward,” mirrors the ethos that Williams embodied.
According to him, the theme should challenge all accountants to reflect on the issue of public trust and architects of societal progress.
He said, “We come together not only to reflect on the monumental contributions of Mr. Akintola Williams but to draw inspiration from his exceptional journey.
“As the first African to qualify as a Chartered Accountant, his pioneering spirit charted a path for countless professionals. In 1952, he established Akintola Williams & Co, Africa’s first indigenous chartered accountancy firm, setting a precedent for excellence and integrity that continues to guide us.
“Mr. Williams did not stop at achieving personal milestones; he was instrumental in founding The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria in 1965, thereby institutionalising the profession within our borders and ensuring that we maintain the highest standards of practice and ethics. His vision was clear: to see a Nigeria where the principles of accountability and financial transparency drive our development and governance.
“As we proceed with today’s program, let us renew our commitment to the values Mr. Williams cherished—excellence, integrity, and service.
“Let his life remind us of the impact one individual can have on a nation’s destiny. Let us strive to carry forward his legacy by ensuring that our profession continues to be a beacon of trust and ethical standards.”
Earlier, the institute unveiled a bust at its secretariat in Victoria lsland, Lagos in honour of the late Williams.
Former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, who spoke at the event called for moral re-alignment, embracing of character, virtues and ethics as the way forward.
Speaking on the theme, “Leadership dynamics: Current realities and the way forward”, the former President described the late Akintola Williams as a true son, who deserved every honour that could be conferred on him, posthumously, going by what he did in the country politically, economically and socially.
He added Akintola had a good pedigree, noble heritage and legacy, which helped him throughout lifetime.
