Muktar Betara, member representing Biu/Bayo/Shani and Kwaya Kusar Federal Constituency of Borno State, has donated N100m to victims of the recent flood in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The devastating flood has displaced over 400,000 residents and claimed more than 30 lives, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
Areas affected include Fori, Galtimari, Gwange, and Bulabulin, leaving thousands homeless and destitute.
During his visit to Governor Babagana Zulum, Betara expressed condolences and support for the victims, stating that the donation was meant to help cushion the effects of the disaster.
He commended Governor Zulum’s efforts in rallying support for the affected communities and pledged to raise the issue of the flood as a matter of urgent public importance when the House of Representatives reconvenes.
Betara, who chairs the House Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring continued support for those affected by the disaster.
He said, “On behalf of the good people of Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwaya/Kusar federal constituency wish to commiserate with you and the entire State government and all our people who are directly and indirectly affected by this unfortunate flood incident, which led to the untimely death of our dear beloved brothers and sisters,” Betara said.
“As evident, thousands of our people were rendered homeless and their livelihoods washed away. May almighty Allah condole you and all of us and grant the departed souls of our loved ones aljana-filta.
“I wish to also commend your excellency and your cabinet for rallying support for our people who were affected by this unfortunate incident as well as the previous interventions you have initiated to bring succour to the affected people across the State.
“We are so proud of you and wish to pledge our unfettered support in all ramifications in the bid to alleviate the suffering of our dear citizens who elected us into various offices.
“To this end, I wish to, on behalf of myself, my family and the good people of Biu/Bayo/Shani/Kwaya/Kusar federal constituency donate the sum of N100 million to support the affected people of Maiduguri.
“I will also ensure that this flood disaster which remains a major humanitarian crisis is brought to the floor as a matter of urgent public importance when the house resumes from the annual recess in the coming weeks.”
Similarly, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State supported the Borno flood victims with N50m and six speedboats.
The donation was announced in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, on Thursday.
Governor Fintiri, during his visit to Maiduguri, stressed the importance of collaboration in alleviating the suffering of flood victims.
The governor, alongside Governors Zulum and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, took a boat ride to assess the extent of the damage and sympathise with the displaced.
Fintiri called on the federal government to take immediate action to address the flood crisis and prevent further devastation.
Both governors emphasised the urgency of sustained relief efforts as the Borno government continues to open internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across the state to house the victims.
