The Labour Party, LP, Caretaker Committee in Abuja has advised Julius Abure to refrain from presenting himself as the national chairman of the party, stating that his term ended on June 9.
Salisu Mohammed, the Secretary of the party’s Board of Trustees, made this statement during a press briefing organized by the leadership of the Labour National Transitional Committee, NTC, in Abuja.
Mohammed explained that the decision was made at the Umuahia stakeholder meeting by the Nenadi Usman-led Caretaker Committee, which was deemed lawful and valid.
He mentioned that the NTC actively involved and rallied all relevant stakeholders to ensure the party’s recovery from what it deemed as Abure’s illegitimate actions and corruption.
He noted that since Abure assumed the position of national chairman after the sudden passing of the party’s National Chairman, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, in 2000, he had governed the party without undergoing an election.

‘In fact, INEC, the Independent National Electoral Commission, had asked him to vacate the chair meant for the Chairman of the Labour Party.
“These interventions by the NTC have culminated in the meeting of the National Executive Committee, NEC, of the Labour Party in Umuahia.
“The National Transitional Committee, NTC facilitated by the Nigerian Labour Congress as the Trustee of the Labour Party fully accepts and commends the decision of the NEC of the Labour Party at its meeting on September 4, 2024.
“We support the 29-man Caretaker Committee to prepare and conduct democratic congresses to elected party leadership at the Ward, LGA, State and National levels’’, he said.
According to him, the NEC put together by Governor Alex Otti of Abia is the much-needed intervention to rescue the party from what he termed as illegalities.
