After a 42-year reign, Oba Adekunle Gabriel Aromolaran II, the Owa Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, has joined his ancestors at the age of 87.
Sources close to the royal family revealed that Oba Aromolaran had been admitted to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where he passed away on Wednesday due to an undisclosed illness.
In the wake of his passing, security operatives secured the royal palace, closing its gates to the public on Thursday.
Chief Olayinka Fasuyi, the Asiwaju of Ijesaland, confirmed the monarch’s demise on Thursday afternoon.
In a statement, he said: “An era comes to an abrupt end! A monumental history closes. The torch bearer of Oduduwa relocates.
“The symbol of Obokun Adimula transits. Ijesaland celebrates the life of her idol, our Imperial Majesty.
“We eulogises the reign of our Owa Obokun Adimula and applaud the legacy of our paramount ruler.
“The 42 years of monumental reign comes to a glorious end. Ijesa women and men, young and old, at home and in diaspora in unison say adieu to our Baba, Oba (Dr) Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran 11, CFR, LL.D; the Owa Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland.”
Oba Aromolaran II ascended the throne in 1982 and was widely respected for his contributions to the development of Ijesaland.
His passing marks the end of an era in the history of the Ijesa people.
The royal family is expected to announce further details regarding funeral arrangements and succession plans in due course.
