Court Grants N500,000 Bail To Accountant For Allegedly Siphoning N4.5M From Company Funds

The Police at the Maroko Division, Lekki, Lagos have arrested Avoke Edesiri Dowe, a 35-year-old accountant with Midak Property Limited, and charged him with fraudulently withdrawing N4,505,700 from his employerโ€™s account.

According to police, Dowe allegedly used his position as an accountant to withdraw the money at different times from his employerโ€™s account, converting the funds for his personal use. The alleged fraud was discovered when his employer audited the companyโ€™s account.

Following a report by the complainant, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Maroko Division, Lekki, directed a team led by Monday Otolor to track down the defendant. Through intelligence gathering, the police located Dowe at a hideout in Lagos and arrested him.

Dowe was charged before the Igbosere Magistrateโ€™s Court sitting at the Ebute Metta Magistrateโ€™s Court, Oyingbo, Lagos on a count of stealing. The offence is punishable under Section 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. His counsel, Anayo Agbo, requested bail in the most liberal terms, assuring the court that Dowe would not jump bail if granted.

Magistrate O.C. Emeka granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. The case was adjourned until September 20, 2024, for mention. The defendant was ordered to be detained at the Ikoyi correctional facility with a detention warrant until he perfects the bail conditions.
