THE Edo State Government has postponed the resumption of schools due to the rising cost of petrol and the difficulties experienced by parents and guardians.

Schools in many parts of Nigeria were scheduled to resume today, September 9.

In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, it was announced that the resumption of all public and private schools has been delayed โ€œuntil further notice.โ€

The statement partly reads: โ€œAn official directive from the government has instructed schools to remain closed due to the ongoing tension caused by the recent petrol price hike and the difficulties faced by parents and guardians.โ€

The government also advised parents, guardians, and caregivers to closely monitor their childrenโ€™s activities during this period, given the heightened tension from the fuel price increase.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) recently raised the pump price of petrol to N855 at its retail outlets, leading to long queues at filling stations.

This increase has also prompted independent petroleum marketers to raise their prices to over โ‚ฆ900 per litre, with black market prices exceeding N1,000 per litre.
