FCT: PSC appoints new commissioner of police Peter Opara

THE Police Service Commission has officially appointed CP Peter Opara as the new Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The PSCโ€™s Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, announced today that Opara succeeds CP Benneth Igwe, who has been promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police and assigned to Zone 7 Abuja as the Zonal Assistant Inspector General of Police.

Prior to this appointment, the new FCT Commissioner served as the immediate past CP in the Force Secretaryโ€™s office and was formerly the Deputy Commissioner of Administration and Finance for the Imo State Command. He has also held the position of Personal Assistant to the former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, IGP Mike Okiro (Rtd).

CP Oparaโ€™s experience includes roles as DCP of Legal Studies at the Police Academy (POLAC) in Wudil, Kano, Area Commander in Aba and Uyo, Area Crime Officer in Kubwa, and Senior Deputy Defence Adviser at Nigeriaโ€™s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. He has also served multiple times as a Personal Assistant to various Inspectors General of Police, as well as to the DIG of Works and the DIG of Operations, and as a Personnel Assistant to the CP of Lagos State Command.

Additionally, the commission has accepted the Inspector-General of Policeโ€™s recommendation to replace CP Miller Gagere Dantawaye with CP Festus Eribo as the new Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State Command. Dantawaye was among four Commissioners of Police recommended for such postings.

CP Festus Eribo, a law graduate from the University of Calabar, previously worked as a Liaison Officer at the Police Service Commission and later as an Assistant Commissioner in Federal Operations at Force Headquarters.

His past roles include Area Commander for Area M and Area F in Lagos, as well as State CID in Lafia, Nasarawa State. He has also served as Area Commander in Agodi, Ibadan, Oyo State, Deputy Commissioner of the Zonal CID in Zone 9 Umuahia, and Deputy Commissioner of Operations in Kogi State. He was previously the substantive Commissioner of Police in Taraba State.

Earlier, the commission approved the postings of four Commissioners of Police, which included those for Abia, Lagos, and Ebonyi states.
