VICTOR Boniface has celebrated his journey from paying to watch UEFA Champions League matches in crowded viewing centres to actually featuring in the competition.
The Super Eagles striker made his debut in the world’s biggest club competition on Thursday night, helping Bayer Leverkusen to a 4-0 victory over Feyenoord in the Netherlands.
After the game, the Nigeria international expressed delight over how far he has come.
“From paying 30 naira to watch Champions League football for night back then for 323 army barrack Akure to playing my first Champions League game. Proud of this moment,” he wrote in pidgin on X.
Boniface joined Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise last year, scoring 21 goals and registering 10 assists in all competitions in his first campaign for the club.
He played a key role as Leverkusen won their first-ever Bundesliga title in the 2023/2024 season, and was voted Bundesliga Rookie Of The Year.
He opened his goal account in the league this season with a brace last weekend in the club’s 4-0 thrashing of Hoffenheim.
