Only ten commercial drivers volunteered to undergo spontaneous alcohol and drug tests organised by the Nasarawa Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Lafia on Thursday.
The tests were carried out at Yahaya Sabo Motor Park, Lafia. NewsNGR reports that hundreds of drivers who were approached refused to be tested, except ten volunteers who tested negative.
The Nasarawa Sector Commander of the corps, CC Lucie Samuel-Mhii, told NewsNGR on Friday that, “The alcohol and drug tests at Yahaya Sabo Motor Park were unprepared. This initiative is part of the command’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and reduce accidents caused by impaired driving.
“The objective is to identify drivers under the influence of stimulants. The testing was carried out using the Alcolizer, a reliable device designed to measure blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels.
“Although the exercise was unplanned, the command aimed to test as many drivers as possible. However, only ten drivers agreed to participate in the test. All ten drivers tested negative for alcohol and drugs. The refusal of the remaining drivers to participate suggests a potential issue with drug use among those who avoided the test.”
She said with the reluctance of a majority of the drivers at the park to be tested, the command would implement testing exercises “as a monthly routine to more effectively address and monitor drug abuse among drivers.”
