IN the early hours of today, a devastating tanker explosion happened on the Lapai-Agaie road, about 2 kilometers from Dendo Community in Agaie Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State.
The tragic incident, which took place around 12:30 a.m., involved a petrol tanker loaded with fuel that collided with a truck carrying passengers and cattle.
The truck, which was traveling from Wudil in Kano State to Lagos, was severely affected by the collision, resulting in a massive explosion.
Two other vehicles—a crane truck and a pickup van—were also engulfed in the inferno, worsening the situation.
Initial reports suggest that over 48 people lost their lives in the fire, while more than 50 cattle were burned alive. The victims’ bodies were given a mass burial toay.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), working alongside Local Government Emergency Committees (LGEMCs), swiftly deployed a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to the site.
Rescue operations are ongoing as emergency personnel search for more victims, with several bodies still trapped in the charred vehicles.
In a statement, NSEMA Director General Abdullahi Baba-arah expressed his condolences to the affected families and assured the public that efforts were underway to manage the situation.
Governor Umaru Bago also expressed his sorrow over the incident.
In a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Bago conveyed his grief over the unfortunate event.
While extending his sympathies to those who suffered losses, the governor urged the public to remain calm and advised road users to exercise caution and follow traffic regulations to protect lives and property.
The governor also prayed for the souls of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
