Nigerian prison official ‘kills’ colleague over food dispute

Kabiru Abubakar, a personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), has allegedly killed his colleague, Aliyu Chiroma, over food dispute in Burra, Ningi local government area of Bauchi State.

The Leadership newspaper reports that the deceased was a close friend of Abubakar.

According to the report, the dispute started between the two Correctional officials when Chiroma brought food for lunch and Abubakar insisted on eating along with him against the former’s will.

The development subsequently led to a confrontation between the duo.

“They exchanged words, which quickly escalated into a fight. Kabiru headbutted Aliyu, making him fall to the ground. The commotion attracted the attention of nearby people,” an eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said.

Chiroma was rushed to the General Hospital Burra, where he eventually died.

However, Spokesperson of NCoS, Bauchi State Command, Aminu Ahmed,
while confirming the incident, according to Leadership, said that the incident occurred outside the correctional facility.

Ahmed added that the deceased, who hailed from Giade local government area of the State, and the suspect, who is from Dass local government area of the State, were both serving at Burra Correctional Center.

He said the body of the deceased has been handed over to his family for burial.

Similarly, the chairman of Ningi local government area, Nasiru Zakari, who also confirmed the incident, said: “I received a report about this unfortunate incident at the Burra Correctional Center, where one officer was allegedly killed by a colleague over a disagreement during lunch.”
