A fatal accident on Lagos Third Mainland Bridge, on Monday, claimed one life while eight others were injured.
Involved in the accident were a Mazda bus and a Volkswagen bus.
In a video seen by NewsNGR, the lifeless body of a man could be seen on the side of the road, while people surrounded a man sitting on the floor, who appears to be one of the victims.
The spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, who confirmed the incident attributed the cause to reckless driving.
According to him, the buses were engaging in a high-speed chase, inward Iyana-Oworonsoki, which led to the accident.
Adebayo said: “The harrowing incident, which unfolded as both buses recklessly engaged in a high-speed chase from Adeniji Adele serves as a stark reminder of the catastrophic consequences of irresponsible driving practices.
“Swift intervention by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) facilitated the rapid rescue of eight passengers, all of whom suffered severe fractures. The injured were immediately transported to Gbagada General Hospital for urgent medical care, courtesy of the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS).
“Police units from Bariga and Alonge Police Stations were instrumental in providing critical security support during the rescue operation, ensuring order and expediting the efforts to restore normalcy.
“The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) reiterates its unwavering commitment to ensuring road safety and implores all motorists to strictly observe speed regulations and exercise caution while driving.
“The agency also extends its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wishes the injured a swift and full recovery.”
In a related development, a Honda CRV (AKD 743 HV), overturned on the bridge near the Unilag waterfront in the early hours of today.
It was gathered that the vehicle was heading towards Iyana-Oworonsoki when the accident occurred.
LASTMA attributed the cause of the crash to excessive speeding. Fortunately, there was no casualty.
