Rukayat Gawat-Oyefeso, the renowned Islamic singer, has been laid to rest following her passing on Tuesday after a brief illness.
In accordance with Islamic customs, her burial took place just a few hours after her death, beginning with the Salatul Janazah, the funeral prayer. The prayer was held at her husband’s residence in Ijebu Ayepe, Ogun State, and attended by family, friends, fans, and colleagues.
Among the notable attendees was Islamic singer Abdulsalam Azeez, better known as Saoty Arewa. Following the prayer, Gawat’s body was taken to the cemetery in Ijebu Ayepe, where she was buried.
Tributes have continued to pour in from family, friends, and fellow musicians. Colleague Mistura Aderounmu expressed her sorrow in an Instagram post, requesting prayers for Gawat, saying, “You came, you saw, and you conquered. May Allah forgive your shortcomings and grant you paradise.”
Rukayat Gawat-Oyefeso, the eldest daughter of prominent TV presenter and cleric Rasaq Gawat, began her journey in Islamic music in 2015. She gained widespread recognition with her song “Aye Le,” which touched on the mysterious disappearance of her father.
Throughout her career, Gawat earned accolades in the Islamic music scene, winning awards like ‘Best Female Islamic Musician’ at the 2016 City People Magazine Awards and ‘Best Islamic Artiste’ at the 2017 City People Music Awards.
She is survived by her husband, Shakiru Oyefeso, and their two children—a son and a daughter.
