Vice President Kashim Shettima has assured Nigerians that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to addressing the persistent flooding challenges in the country. Shettima, speaking during a visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, on Tuesday, revealed that a comprehensive roadmap to tackle the flooding issue has already been developed.
The Vice President conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the devastating floods that have displaced numerous communities in Maiduguri. In a statement by his spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima described the current disaster as the most severe flood in Maiduguri in over three decades.
Despite the implementation of comprehensive contingency plans and proactive measures to mitigate potential impacts based on the 2024 flood outlooks, Shettima acknowledged that the flood’s severity has far exceeded government estimates. He expressed deep sympathy for the victims and reassured them that President Tinubu’s administration will prioritize their welfare.
The flooding, which began over the weekend, has worsened due to excess water from the Alau Dam and the collapse of spillways, leading to a significant surge of water downstream. This has resulted in widespread flooding in surrounding communities.
