Southern Senators Forum Seeks Support For Relief Efforts – Independent Newspaper Nigeria

ABUJA: The Nigerian Southern Senators Forum has called on Nigerians to support relief efforts in flood affected Borno State.

The Forum, in a statement on Friday, noted that such efforts should come in “any way possible,” as it sought for continued prayers for the speedy recovery of victims of the incident.

The statement also read “We are deeply saddened by the tragic impact of these floods on the lives of the residents of Maiduguri.

“We stand in solidarity with all those who have been affected by this natural disaster and commend the efforts of the Federal and Borno State governments, emergency response agencies, and humanitarian organizations who are working tirelessly to provide relief and support to the victims of this disaster.”

The Alau dam on Tuesday collapsed, sending uncontrolled water downward to the state capital, leading to over 100 deaths, with more persons displaced.

As the Senators representing the Southern part of the country, the statement continued, “we are committed to working with our brother colleagues across the country to ensure that measures are put in place to prevent such occurrences in the future.”

This is as it called on “relevant agencies of government to intensify efforts towards mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and implementing effective flood control measures to safeguard lives and properties.”

wishes to extend its deepest sympathies to the government and people of Borno State over the recent devastating flood incidents that have resulted in the loss of lives, displacement of communities, and destruction of properties.

Signed by the Forum’s Chairman, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, the statement sought God “to comfort the families of the victims, and grant the government and people of Borno State the wisdom, strength and courage to rebuild.”
