The Super Eagles of Nigeria have officially opened their camp in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as they gear up for their pivotal Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda.
The Nigerian national team, under the guidance of interim coach Austin Eguavoen, is leaving no stone unturned in their quest to secure a spot in next year’s tournament in Morocco.
The camp welcomed its first batch of players on Monday, marking the commencement of an intense preparation period.
Leading the early arrivals was team captain William Troost-Ekong, who now plies his trade in Saudi Arabia. He was joined by Nottingham Forest’s dynamic duo Taiwo Awoniyi and Ola Aina, West Bromwich Albion defender Semi Ajayi, Italy-based forward Ademola Lookman, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Orlando Pirates’ reliable center-back Olisa Ndah.
The arrival of these seven players has set the tone for what is expected to be a rigorous training schedule, as the Super Eagles aim to sharpen their skills and build strong team chemistry ahead of the qualifiers. The remaining 16 players from the 23-man squad invited by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are anticipated to join the camp soon.
Austin Eguavoen, who is also the head of the NFF’s technical committee, has been appointed as the interim coach for the two crucial encounters. He will be assisted by Daniel Ogunmodede from Remo Stars and Fidelis Ilechukwu from Enugu Rangers, both of whom bring valuable expertise to the coaching setup.
