An Acura SUV collided with two cows on Sunday, resulting in the death of the animals in the Iyana-Oworo area of Lagos State.
The front of the vehicle sustained significant damage due to the impact.
According to the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, the accident occurred at Iyana-Oworo, inward Ogudu, when a herd of cattle was crossing the highway.
“LASTMA officers, after clearing the Acura SUV from the road to ease traffic, handed the vehicle over to the police at Ogudu Police Station for further investigation,” Taofiq said.
In a related incident, two buses collided on the Ifako Bridge, inward Ogudu. The vehicles involved were an unpainted commercial Mazda bus (MUS 576 YJ) and a Korope mini-bus (FKJ 618).
At least five people were injured in the accident. The victims are currently receiving medical attention at an emergency center near the Toll Gate.
Adebayo attributed the cause of the accident to negligence on the part of one of the drivers, who reportedly lost control while eating and driving.
“Preliminary investigations reveal that the driver of the Mazda bus, distracted by eating, lost focus and control of the vehicle. A sudden brake failure worsened the situation, leading to the collision,” he explained.
“LASTMA officers responded swiftly, rescuing five injured individuals—one male and four females—from the Mazda bus. The victims received immediate care, in conjunction with the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), and were transported to the Accident and Emergency Centre near the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Toll Gate.”
Meanwhile, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the victims and urged motorists to prioritize road safety and avoid dangerous driving habits.
