Tragedy Strikes Ibadan: Five Dead, Many Hospitalised After Feast at White-Garment Church

In a devastating occurrence at a white-garment church in Ibadan, Oyo State, five worshippers have tragically lost their lives, and many others have been hospitalized.

The victims fell ill after partaking in a traditional feast, known as โ€œipeseโ€ in Yoruba, during a Sunday service, as reported by Sunday Tribune.

The cause of the deaths and illnesses remains unknown, raising concerns and prompting investigations. While about 50 worshippers have been treated and discharged, several others are still receiving medical attention.

The Ipese feast, an important tradition in the churchโ€™s doctrine, has come under scrutiny, though there is no confirmation yet that it directly caused the tragic incident.

A church insider, speaking anonymously, stated, โ€œI ate the prepared beans like every other member, including the victims, and nothing happened to me. The incident was not all about Ipese as made to believe.โ€

The church, however, remains under investigation by various bodies, including the police, Directorate of State Services (DSS), World Health Organization (WHO), and media organisations. The findings of these investigations are yet to be made public.

Contrary to rumors, the church has not been closed. โ€œThe Shepherd-in-Charge has been attending to visitors since morning,โ€ the source added, clarifying that the church remains functional, though the leadership is cooperating with ongoing investigations.

A senior medical staff member at the Infectious Disease Centre (IDC), Idodo, Ibadan, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that while 50 victims have been treated and discharged, some remain hospitalized as they continue to receive treatment.

An official statement from the Oyo State Commissioner for Health is expected next week, which may provide further insights into the cause of the incident.

Police Public Relations Officer SP Adewale Osifeso has confirmed the incident, stating, โ€œInvestigation is ongoing on the matter.โ€

This tragic event has left the community in shock, and the churchโ€™s leadership and congregation are awaiting the findings of the health and safety investigations as they grapple with the loss of their members.
