The Italian world No.1 will face Russian fifth seed Daniil Medvedev for a place in the semi-finals.
Also in the men’s singles, 10th seed Alex de Minaur swept past Jordan Thompson 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in an all-Australian showdown to set up a quarter-final against Briton Jack Draper.
Women’s top seed Iga Swiatek was in ruthless mood, overpowering Russian 16th seed Liudmila Samsonova 6-4, 6-1 to set up a quarter-final clash with sixth seed Jessica Pegula in her bid for a sixth Grand Slam title.
The 22-year-old, who is a Ted Lasso fan, said she tried to stay focused after seeing the show’s leading actor Jason Sudeikis in the crowd: “I hope he appreciates my mentality because that’s what Ted Lasso is all about”.
Meanwhile, Brazilian 22nd seed Beatriz Haddad Maia knocked out former Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 to earn a quarter-final meeting with Czech Karolina Muchova.
