“Xavi had me defending” – Barcelona star credits Hansi Flick for resurgence

Brazilian forward Raphinha has opened up about his stellar form at Barcelona this season, crediting new manager Hansi Flick for the tactical adjustments that have brought the best out of him, Soccernet.football reports.

After a challenging 2023-24 campaign under Xavi, where he struggled to find consistency, Raphinha has already registered five goals and three assists in just seven La Liga games this term.

By comparison, the 27-year-old managed only six goals across 28 league appearances last season.

One of the key differences, according to Raphinha, has been a shift in his positioning.

Speaking to La Liga after being named Player of the Month for August, he revealed how his new role under Flick has allowed him to focus more on attacking.

“During last season, Xavi had me defending several times and the truth is that I really like being closer to the goal,” Raphinha explained as per BarcaBlaugranes.

“I’m a player who really likes to score and assist, so I know that the closer the goal is, the more opportunities I have to score or pass.”

Raphinha went on to emphasise how Flick’s tactical approach has made him more effective, particularly when he plays higher up the pitch.

“Well, on the wing, it’s a little further away and a little more complicated depending on the game,” he added.

The Brazilian winger also highlighted the importance of a mental reset over the summer, returning to Barcelona with a fresh perspective and ready to adapt to Flick’s methods.

“I think there is fresh air in the team,” Raphinha noted. “When the coach and the staff change, things naturally evolve… You go on holiday, breathe, be with your family, disconnect from the playing environment, and when you come back, you are more focused on your work.”

Barcelona, currently enjoying a perfect start to the 2024-25 season under Flick with seven wins in seven games, will aim to maintain their momentum when they face Osasuna this weekend.
