Abia Lawmaker Faces Suspension As Reps Probe Assault On Cab Driver

Abia lawmaker, Alex Ikwechegh, is facing a likely lengthy suspension for assaulting an e-hailing driver who had gone to his house in Abuja to deliver an item.

The lawmaker was caught on camera assaulting the cab driver on Sunday and has been placed under Investigation, the outcome of which may result in a lengthy suspension as a deterrent, some lawmakers have said.

While his party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has joined public condemnation of the attack, the lawmaker on Tuesday in a controversial apology which was AI generated, offered to apologise.

An aide to the lawmaker told NewsNGR that โ€œwriting an apology letter with the aid of AI was normal.

โ€œDonโ€™t think too much about it.โ€

The apex Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has also condemned the action of the lawmaker.

However, the House during plenary on Tuesday moved to probe the lawmaker and referred him to the House Ethic Committee for investigation.

The resolution was a sequel to a point of order raised by the Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere.

In the viral video on social media, the lawmaker was seen assaulting Stephen Abuwatseya, an e-hailing rider.

He threatened to make the Bolt driver disappear.

The lawmaker was however absent from plenary on Tuesday when his matter was discussed with no objections from lawmakers present.
