A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, to 11 years imprisonment for importing 35.2kg of Canadian Loud, a potent strain of synthetic cannabis, into Nigeria.
Munju, arrested on 3rd October 2024 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, was convicted after pleading guilty to two charges brought against her by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Femi Babafemi, NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, confirmed the conviction in a statement.
“She said she took the offer because she needed the money to pay for her ongoing master’s degree program in Canada,” the statement read, detailing Munju’s confession.
She admitted to being recruited online for $10,000 to traffic the drugs into Nigeria.
Prosecuting counsel Barrister Abu Ibrahim highlighted how Munju’s actions violated Sections 20(1)(a) and 19 of the NDLEA Act, with Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics, Angela Mba, providing testimony on Munju’s arrest. Mba also submitted exhibits, including Munju’s Canadian passport, confessional statements, and the drug sample.
Following her guilty plea, Justice Dehinde Dipeolu sentenced Munju to six years on the first count and five years on the second. An option of ₦100 million in fines was also provided—₦50 million per count.
NDLEA Chairman Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended the swift judicial process, stating, “The stiff penalty will send a strong warning to foreigners and others who may be contemplating bringing illicit drugs into Nigeria.”
