The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) announced its readiness to train farmers in vegetable production, focusing on the F1 species of bell pepper.
Professor Ayo Olalusi, the team lead for vegetable production, explained that the process involves planting and nurturing this hybrid variety, which offers several advantages over traditional types.
During a visit to the University’s Greenhouse Research Farm, Olalusi described the F1 bell pepper as an early-ripening variety that doesn’t require staking and is resistant to diseases.
He said, “The advantageous features include a high level of resistance to diseases, vigorous and strong plant, sweet flavor, and the fruit size is about 10-11 cm width by 11-12 cm length, while it weighs between 250-280g.
“The uniqueness of the F1 Bell pepper is that it can only be propagated in a greenhouse and FUTA is willing to take on the responsibility of guiding interested individuals and farmers through the process of greenhouse cultivation either on a small scale or large-scale basis”.
Olalusi emphasized that FUTA is committed to guiding farmers and individuals in greenhouse cultivation, whether on a small or large scale, and the university will continue growing the peppers for local availability.
He also expressed openness to partnerships for large-scale production that could generate revenue for FUTA and partners.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji praised the greenhouse project and expressed her vision for its growth.
She emphasized the importance of training individuals in cultivating bell peppers, F1 tomatoes, and other crops to help address food security issues.
Oladiji also announced plans to expand the greenhouse facilities with the help of university engineers, technologists, and fabricators.
