Former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has praised Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface despite Bayer Leverkusen’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen on Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Boniface has been impressive at Bayer Leverkusen since he joined the club last year. This season, he has been on a roll. Although he was involved in a very bad car crash after the club’s game against Eintracht Frankfurt last week, he returned to action for Die Werkself when they traveled to Weserstadion on Saturday.
Although he sustained minor injuries on his hand, Boniface was in fine shape as he scored the opener for Bayer Leverkusen in the 30th minute.
The reigning Bundesliga champions looked like the better side for most of the fixture, but they slipped in the 90th minute and had to settle for a 2-2 draw.
After the game, former Arsenal man Xhaka who has been a important member of the team since he joined last season, spoke about Boniface glowingly. However, he was quite critical of the overall team’s performance.
“We know that he has quality and makes the team better. Accordingly, Boni helped us with his goal, also with good things, with good actions,” Boniface said, per Bild.
“But in the end it’s not about individual players, but about the whole team and we win and lose together. Unfortunately, we couldn’t win.”
Following their draw, Bayer Leverkusen now sit five points adrift of Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich.
