Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has raised concerns about the growing threat of cybercriminals exploiting vulnerabilities in Nigeria’s systems to target individuals, businesses, and government institutions.
Speaking on Wednesday at the Nigeria Police’s Cybersecurity Week in Abuja, Egbetokun highlighted the dangers posed by cybercrime to national security and critical infrastructure.
Represented by Deputy Inspector General of Police Bala Ciroma, Egbetokun said, “Cybercriminals operate across borders, exploiting vulnerabilities in our systems and targeting individuals, businesses, and government institutions. These threats can disrupt critical infrastructure, compromise sensitive information, and undermine the very fabric of our society.”
Uche Henry, Director of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, also warned that the impact of cybercrime could be devastating if not addressed, potentially crippling systems and endangering citizen safety and privacy.
Henry stated, “In today’s interconnected world, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated. As cyber threats evolve in sophistication and scale, all stakeholders—government agencies, law enforcement, private sector partners, and individuals—must come together to counter these challenges. It is our shared responsibility to ensure Nigeria remains resilient in the face of these threats.”
The event emphasised the need for collaboration among various sectors to safeguard Nigeria’s digital space.
