The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said that it will sanction Starlink for unauthorised data tariff hike for Nigerian subscribers.
The regulator said this on Tuesday in a statement signed by its Director, Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, seen by NewsNGR.
The statement titled, ‘Starlink didn’t Receive Approval before Data Tariff Increase,’ accused the satellite internet service owned by billionaire businessman, Elon Musk of acting outside extant laws.
Starlink notified its customers via email that beginning from October 1, 2024, its standard residential plan with a 1TB fair usage policy will now cost N75,000 ($48), up from N38,000 ($24).
But the price for Starlink kits remained unchanged at N440,000.
Also, roaming customers have been hit the hardest as the price for regional roaming — which allows users to access Starlink services beyond their homes or workplaces within Africa — has increased to N167,000 per month from N49,000. International roaming will now cost a staggering N717,000 per month.
Reacting NCC said, “The decision by Starlink to unilaterally review its subscription packages upwards did not receive the approval of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
“We were surprised that the company jumped the gun by announcing price changes after filing a request to the commission seeking approval for price adjustment for which the commission was yet to communicate a decision.
“The action of the company appears to be a contravention of Sections 108 and 111 of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, and Starlink’s Licence Conditions regarding tariffs.
“The Commission will, therefore, take appropriate enforcement measures against any action by a licensee that is capable of eroding the regulatory stability of the telecommunications industry.”
