The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, has criticised former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, for urging Nigerians to protest over the current economic hardship in the country.
Matawalle described Amaechi’s statements as reckless and a potential threat to national stability.
In a statement issued by Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information for the Ministry of Defence on Saturday, Matawalle expressed grave concern over the former minister’s comments, warning that such rhetoric could incite unrest at a time when the government is working to address the nation’s challenges.
“It is both reckless and irresponsible for someone of Amaechi’s stature to incite Nigerians against their own government,” Matawalle said.
“At a time when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is making tireless efforts through various reforms to address the country’s difficulties, it is absurd and shameful for anyone to exploit the genuine struggles of our citizens for political gain.”
The defence minister stressed that the government remains committed to safeguarding the peace and security of the nation, and any attempts to destabilise the country would be firmly dealt with.
“We will not allow anyone to fan the flames of violence or manipulate the current hardships for selfish purposes,” Matawalle warned. “This serves as a final caution to Amaechi and his associates.”
Matawalle urged Amaechi to focus on supporting the government’s efforts to move the country forward rather than making divisive and inflammatory remarks.
“It is expected that someone of Amaechi’s calibre would work hand in hand with the government to improve the nation, rather than making short-sighted and destructive assertions,” he added.
The minister concluded by emphasising that the government would continue to take measures to protect the welfare and security of all Nigerians.
